What is the different Shipping and Logistics?

They are not the same but both are interrelated terms within the field of operations management but each has its focus.

Definition:

Logistics refers to the comprehensive process of managing how resources are acquired, stored, and transported to their final destinations, whereas shipping is a specific component of logistics that primarily involves the transfer or transportation of goods.

Scope:

Logistics has a broader scope that includes a range of processes such as inventory management, warehousing, and distribution. Shipping, on the other hand, focuses specifically on the delivery of goods from one location to another.

Responsibility:

Logisticians are responsible for overseeing the entire logistics process, which includes duties like coordinating suppliers, manufacturers, and retailers. However, a shipping company is typically responsible only for the safe and timely transportation of goods.

Skills:

While the skills required for logistics management include strategic planning, coordination, and problem-solving, the ones required for shipping typically include knowledge of shipping regulations, the ability to handle shipping documentation, and an understanding of scheduling and routing.

Outcome:

A successful logistics operation leads to an efficient supply chain with satisfied customers, whereas the success of a shipping operation is largely determined by how timely and safe the delivery of goods is.
